Once your application is approved and a final determination has been entered, the processing office will send you a "Passport Request" letter through your account.

You will have to follow the instructions provided and send your valid passport, as well as the passports of your accompanying spouse or common-law partner and dependent children (if applicable).

IRCC will then mail you:

From here, the next step will depend on whether you are currently inside or outside of Canada:

If you are in Canada

IRCC will contact you with further instructions and request a short interview with an officer.

You’ll have two options when it comes to the interview:

1. Make an appointment with one of their offices (recommended)

2. Go to a Canadian Port-of-Entry (border) and present:

  • Your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
  • Proof of funds to support yourself and your family

The officer will want to confirm a few things with you during the interview, namely:

1. Whether your documents are valid

2. Ask you a couple of questions to verify you still meet the terms to immigrate to Canada

3. Confirm your Canadian mailing address (where they will send you your PR card)

If you are outside Canada

When you arrive in Canada, you will need to present a few things, namely:

  • A valid passport and/or travel document
  • Your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
  • Your permanent residence visa (if you received one)
  • Proof of funds to support yourself and your family

Once you arrive, you will meet a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer who will:

1. Make sure you’re entering Canada before or on the date your COPR expires

2. Make sure you’re the same person who was approved to travel to Canada (referring to your Biometrics)

3. Check your passport and/or travel document

4. Ask you a couple of questions to verify you still meet the terms to immigrate to Canada

In both cases, make sure you have your passport and documents on hand at all times. Do not pack them in your luggage because you may be asked to present them. Also, if you change your address within 180 days of arriving in Canada, you must notify IRCC through this web form.
